Burne, Melian head to NCAA Regionals
May 28, 2014
Jacksonville, Fla. – Senior Olivia Burne and sophomore Christina Melian of the Stony Brook women’s track and field team will compete in the NCAA Outdoor Regional Championships in the 1,500-meter and 5,000-meter runs, respectively.
Burne, who is making her fourth appearance in four years in the 1,500-meters, will race in the first round Thursday at 6 p.m. and will look to advance to the second round for the second consecutive season. In 2013, she earned a second-round berth for the first time in her career by securing fifth in her heat in 4:27.23. The first five finishers in each of four heats of 12 runners plus the next four fastest times will move on to Saturday’s quarterfinal round.
Burne enters race 17th on the descending order list with a time of 4:19.58, the personal record she set at the Swarthmore Final Qualifier May 12. The Palmerston North, New Zealand native has enjoyed a stellar outdoor season in the event, including a second straight America East individual outdoor title and four ECAC-qualifying times.
Melian will make her NCAA Regional debut when she races Saturday at 8:45 p.m. No stranger to big races, she claimed the 2013 junior national title and ECAC title in the 3,000-meters last year.
Melian ranks 25th on the descending order list with the performance of 16:11.88 she achieved in a third-place finish at the Penn Relays in April. The top five runners in each semifinal heat of 24 runners plus the next two fastest times will advance to the NCAA Championship Final at the University of Oregon.
The NCAA Championships will be held June 11-14.
