Stony Brook, N.Y. – Junior Olivia Burne of the Stony Brook women’s track team has been selected to participate in the NCAA Outdoor Regional Championships in the women’s 1500-meter event.  Competition is slated for May 23 and 25 at North Carolina A&T College in Greensboro, N.C.

The NCAA Regionals serve as the first and second rounds of the NCAA Championship.  48 student-athletes will compete in four heats of 12 on Thursday, May 23 with 24 moving on to the second race on Saturday, May 25.

Burne, who hails from Palmerston North, New Zealand, secured her spot in the meet with a season-best performance of 4:22.90 in the event at the Virginia Challenge last weekend. She was also won the America East title in the women’s 1500 on May 5, clocking in at 4:26.24 and hitting an ECAC qualifier.

"Qualifying for the first round of the NCAAs has been Olivia's goal all spring,” head track and field coach Andy Ronan said.  “The last two weeks have gone very well for her as she won the conference title and notched her fastest time of the season at the Virginia Challenge the following weekend. She can head to the Championships with confidence that she is racing well at the right time.”
