Albuquerque, N.M. – Senior Olivia Burne of the Stony Brook women’s track team is headed to the NCAA Championships to compete in the mile. She will race in the semifinal Friday at 8:15 p.m. A tape delay of the championship will air Saturday, March 22 at 7:30 p.m. on ESPNU.

“Olivia’s indoor season could not have gone any better,” head coach Andy Ronan said. “She has accomplished her goal of competing in the NCAA Championships.

“Today, she steps into new territory by competing in the championship for the first time. I feel she is ready for the challenge. More importantly, Olivia believes she is ready. The 16 best milers in the country have come to Albuquerque. Tonight, 10 will advance to the final. Olivia is focused on being one of the 10.”

Burne is seeded 12th and will compete in the second of two heats.  The top four finishers in each heat plus the next two fastest times will advance to Saturday’s final at 8:10 p.m.

The Palmerston, New Zealand product has produced a stellar indoor season in both the mile and 1,000-meters. She has hit three ECAC qualifiers in the mile, notching a new personal-best time of 4:36.22 at the Boston University Last Chance Meet March 2. The time was a 1.8-second improvement from her previous PR of 4:38.10 set at the Terrier Invite in January.

Burne recently won a conference championship in the 1,000-meters, giving her an individual crown in each of the last three America East Championships. She won the 2013 outdoor 1,500-meters and cross country titles.

Although this is her first trip to the NCAA Indoor Championships, Burne has taken part in the NCAA Outdoor Regional Championships in each of the last three seasons and participated in the 2010 NCAA Cross Country Championships.

Lucy Van Dalen became Stony Brook's first individual national champion in any sport when she won the indoor mile in 4:39.76 in 2012.
