Van Dalen named Most Outstanding Track Performer at AE Championships

Orono, Maine - Senior Lucy Van Dalen (Wanganui, New Zealand) set an America East record in the 1,500 en route to Most Outstanding Track Performer honors at the America East Championships Sunday in Maine.

Van Dalen, who owned the previous mark of 4:15.13, finished in 4:14.71. Her time is the eighth fastest in the country this season.

Senior Mary O'Connor (Waterford, Ireland) also finished in the top five, taking third in the 800 (2:09.48). Sophomore Olivia Burne (Palmerston North, New Zealand) placed fourth in the 1,500 (4:228.89) and senior Patricia Barry (Tipperary, Ireland) took fifth in the 5,000 (17:03.45).

The women's 4x800, made up of O'Connor, Burne, senior Kristal Conklin (Middletown, N.Y.) and senior Carolina Cortes (Woodmere, N.Y.) finished third (9:07.33), earning six points.

Two school records fell on the men's side on day two. Freshman Terry Martin (Pine Bush, N.Y.) broke his own school record in the 400 hurdles, running a 53.40. The 4x800 relay, consisting of sophomore Eric Speakman (Napier, New Zealand), senior Shamell Forbes (Springfield Gardens, N.Y.), junior Michael Lopizzo (Northport, N.Y.) and sophomore James Snak (Smithtown, N.Y.) finished in 7:43.23, breaking the old mark by nearly three seconds.



Speakman placed second in the 1,500 (3:47.62), Martin took third in the 110 hurdles (14.79) and Forbes finished fifth in the 800 (1:53.07).

The 4x400 relay took fourth in the a time of 3:17.19.
