Jason Headman joined the athletics staff as an assistant coach for men's and women's cross country and track and field in March 2013.
"I am excited to have Jason join the program," Ronan said. "His experiences as a student-athlete and coach will be an asset to the program as it strives to be competitive within the America East and northeast region."
No stranger to the America East, Headman comes to Stony Brook after more than a year as an assistant coach for men's and women's cross country/track and field at Binghamton University, where he coached four conference champions and served as the distance recruiting coordinator.
During his tenure at Binghamton, he helped guide Erik van Ingen, an Olympic trials qualifier and first-team All-American in the indoor mile and 1500-meter.
Under Headman's tutelage, the Bearcats broke seven school records and saw their distance medley relay team race to a third-place finish at the Penn Relays. He mentored three NCAA East Preliminary qualifiers, 11 all-conference track performers and one All-America East cross country honoree.
Prior to his arrival at Binghamton, he coached the Allegheny College men's distance medley relay team to a NCAA Division III national championship in 2011 en route to a USTFCCCA Division III Indoor Mid-East Assistant Coach of the Year nod. In 2010, the Gators men's and women's cross country teams won the North Coast Athletic Conference titles and competed in the NCAA Championships. Both of Allegheny's cross country squads earned USTFCCCA 2010 all-academic status in 2010 and multiple Gators were named All-Americans. His responsibilities at Allegheny included working as the team's recruiting and travel coordinator and monitoring the academic progress of student-athletes.
He also served a stint as an assistant coach at Heidelberg University from 2009-2010 and was a student coach at Akron University, where he earned his bachelor's degree in physical education in May 2009. Additionally, he competed on and captained the track and field and cross country teams at Akron. A two-time All-Ohio Cross Country selection, Headman broke the school records in the indoor 5,000-meter and outdoor 5,000-meter and 10,000-meter. He wracked up a combined eight All-Mid American Conference accolades, including first-team honors for cross country in 2006 and 2007, and helped the track and field squad to conference championships in 2008 and 2009.
Headman completed his master's degree in education in May 2012.
