BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Stony Brook University softball team opened its season against Florida Atlantic at the FAU Paradise Classic on Friday night.
Senior pitcher
Ashton Melaas got the first start of the season in the circle for the Seawolves and tossed three complete innings. Junior pitcher
Mia Haynes made her Stony Brook debut when she took over for Melaas in the fourth inning.
The Owls took an early 4-0 lead, scoring four runs in the first inning. The Seawolves got out of the first when senior catcher
Corinne Badger caught FAU's Zoey Jones stealing second with a throw down the middle to junior infielder
Kyra McFarland.
McFarland was able to cut the Owls' lead to 7-2 in the top of the fifth when the junior singled up the middle to bring in junior infielder
Sofia Chambers and senior outfielder
Shauna Nuss.
However, Stony Brook was unable to hold on as FAU plated two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to secure the win, 10-2.
STATS AND NOTES
- McFarland went 2-3 at the dish with a pair of singles and two RBI. The two RBI mark the Seawolves' first runs of the season.
- Sophomore outfielder Alyssa Costello went 1-2 at the plate, recording her first career triple.
- Junior outfielder Alicia Orosco and Nuss both recorded their first hits of the season.
- Melaas threw for 3.0 innings and recorded her first strikeout of the season.
- Haynes made her Stony Brook debut tossing for 1.2 innings and recording her first strikeout of the season.

The Seawolves are back on the field for two more games tomorrow, Saturday, February 11. Stony Brook takes on Mississippi State first at 11:30 a.m., and then goes head-to-head with Bethune-Cookman at 4:30 p.m. Both games will be broadcast live on FloSoftball.
