VESTAL, N.Y. – Stony Brook softball avoided elimination for the second-straight game in the America East Championship tournament on Thursday, topping Hartford by the final score of 7-3 at the Bearcat Softball Complex.
With the win, the No. 3 Seawolves (18-28, 9-7 AE) move on to the third day of the conference postseason tournament, where they will square off with No. 1 Binghamton on Friday at 1:30 p.m.
Jourdin Hering (Federal Way, Wash.) went 3-for-4 at the plate for the Seawolves from the leadoff spot, making her 6-for-12 so far in postseason play.
Lexie Shue (Lakewood, Calif.) and
Taylor Pechin (Harrington, Del.) both homered, giving starting pitcher
Lindsey Hughes (San Dimas, Calif.) plenty of run support.

"We came out with great focus and energy today and set the tone early. Lindsey [Hughes] gave us a solid effort and our defense was outstanding. We have to continue to have this same approach to advance in this tourney."
Notes
- Lindsey Hughes (San Dimas, Calif.) tossed 6.1 innings to earn the victory, her fifth win of the season in the circle. She gave up just six hits and three runs to go along with three strikeouts.
- The Seawolves got off to a hot start, plating two runs on two hits in the top of the first inning. Jourdin Hering (Federal Way, Wash.) led off the bottom of the first with a single to left field, then stole second base. Melissa Rahrich (Brighton, Colo.) then belted a double to right-center to plate Hering and make it 1-0 Seawolves. Irene Rivera (Sylmar, Calif.) was next, hitting a sac fly to center field to give Stony Brook a two-run lead.
- Lexie Shue (Lakewood, Calif.) led off the second inning with a solo home run, her fifth of the season. Shue belted a pitch deep to left field, making it 3-0 Stony Brook.
- Taylor Pechin (Harrington, Del.) also homered, blasting the first long ball of her collegiate career in the third inning. The three-run shot extended the Seawolves' lead to 7-0, at the time.
- The Seawolves had seven hits and seven runs in total, scoring twice in the first, once in the second and four times in the third inning.

With the win, the Seawolves move on to day three of the America East Championships. Stony Brook will square off with No. 1 Binghamton on Friday, May 12 at 1:30 p.m. from the Bearcat Softball Complex.
