Seawolves unanimously picked to win America East title

BOSTON – The Stony Brook women's lacrosse team was unanimously selected to win the 2017 America East title in a poll of the conference's coaches, as announced Wednesday morning by the conference office.

The Seawolves received six first-place votes – teams were not permitted to vote for themselves – after posting a 17-4 record in a 2016 campaign that saw Stony Brook win its fourth-straight America East title. Albany, the conference runner-up in each of the last four seasons, was selected second, while the other two semifinalists from a year ago, New Hampshire and UMBC, were chosen third and fourth. Vermont, Binghamton and UMass Lowell rounded out the seven-team league.

Stony Brook returns 96.8% of its scoring from a year ago and 10 starters, including six who were named preseason All-Americans by Inside Lacrosse. Senior Courtney Murphy (Shirley, N.Y.) and junior Kylie Ohlmiller (Islip, N.Y.) were tabbed as first-team selections by the publication.

The Seawolves open the 2017 campaign with a game at Towson, Saturday, Feb. 4, in Towson, Maryland.
