Stony Brook, N.Y. - Stony Brook's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) spent the entire month of November collecting food items for its annual Thanksgiving Food Drive. The student-athletes collected at local grocery stores and made personal donations. In collaboration with the Marketing department, they collected over 1,000 items of food.
The food items were donated to the newly opened Stony Brook University Food Pantry, which joined the College and University Food Bank Alliance in June of 2013 and opened its doors the following fall. The food pantry serves students of Stony Brook University as well as the Stony Brook community that are at risk of food insecurity.
"The food drive conducted by student-athletes and the Athletics Department was the most successful food drive to benefit the SBU Food Pantry to date," said Casey McGloin, Assistant Director for the Center for Community Engagement & Leadership Development at Stony Brook University. "On behalf of Stony Brook’s food-insecure population, we are very grateful for the time and compassion that SB Athletics has generously given."
The SAAC's leadership in 2013-14 includes Taylor Gillie and Lo Hathaway of the volleyball team, Emily Cheng of the women's swimming & diving team, Catie Pfeiffer of the women's soccer team, Allison Cukrov of the softball team and Allison Zelnick of the volleyball and women's swimming & diving teams.
