Stony Brook Athletics hosts third-annual Thanksgiving Challenge

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Stony Brook Athletics hosted its third-annual Thanksgiving Challenge on Monday, featuring a seven-station strength and conditioning circuit for its spring student-athletes.

Athletes from the baseball, softball and men's and women's lacrosse teams had three minutes to complete as many reps as possible in seven consecutive stations. Reps were recorded for each station and tallied for a team's total score. The competition was set up to match the softball team against the women's lacrosse team and the baseball team against the men's lacrosse team.

"The third-annual Thanksgiving Challenge saw 94 student-athletes from four teams compete for the title of Stony Brook's fittest student-athlete," said David Van Dyke, Director of Speed, Strength and Conditioning. "At the end of the day, Robbie Campbell of the men's lacrosse team rose above the competition and posted the top individual men's performance, while Gina Bianculli of the softball team was the top women's performer," Van Dyke added.

Campbell (Delta, British Columbia) posted a score of 505 (dead lift - 150 reps, sled push/pull - 100 yds, box jump - 60 reps, push press - 52 reps, HR push-up - 39, wall ball - 50, Erg - 54 kcal). Campbell was the only competitor to break the 500-point plateau. Senior Pat Cantwell (West Islip, N.Y.) was the baseball team's top scorer with 417 points.

On the women's side, Bianculli (Oakdale, N.Y.) registered a score of 465 for the softball team, while sophomore Samantha Citron (Jackson, N.J.) was the women's lacrosse top finisher with 457.

The fall and winter teams will compete against each other in the Spring Challenge next May.
