Last week, Stony Brook had a couple of big upsets on the road as the football team defeated nationally ranked James Madison and the women's basketball team overcame a tough start to beat a strong Bradley Braves team. Congratulations to both for their efforts!
This week, it's all about the #EmpireClash as the football team hosts Albany in the 2013 season finale. The SUNY rivalry is expected to heat up as this game represents a rematch of the 2011 NCAA Div. I Football Championship first-round game, won by the #Seawolves on a last-second interception by Dominick Reyes.
Tickets to the game are available online and by phone at (631) 632-WOLF. There will be a turkey drive, sponsored by Bethpage Federal Credit Union, so fans are encouraged to drop off a frozen turkey before coming entering LaValle Stadium. There will also be tons of student programming this week to get everyone excited to beat the Great Danes, so stay tuned on Stony Brook's social media channels for details.
Football lights up James Madison; #EmpireClash looms
The #Seawolves went on the road last Saturday and bullied James Madison with its offense, scoring 31 first-half points, before holding on for a 41-38 victory over the nationally ranked Dukes. Quarterback Lyle Negron had three touchdown passes and 395 passing yards, 183 going to Adrian Coxson alone. The win sets up a chance to end the season on a high note as the #Seawolves host Albany in the #EmpireClash. Read the recap of the game here, and watch the highlights of the exciting win below.
Men's hoops splits week's games; heads to Detroit next
The #Seawolves finished their three-game homestand on Wednesday with a strong 73-66 win over defending CAA regular season champion Northeastern, featuring four players in double-figure scoring. Stony Brook was unable to carry the momentum in its first road game, falling to nationally ranked Indiana on Sunday, 90-74. The #Seawolves were in the game the entire way though despite being called for 32 fouls, including 18 in the first half alone. The #Seawolves will next head to Detroit to participate in the subregional of the 2KSports Classic benefiting Wounded Warrior Project. Women's hoops rolls over Bradley on the road
The Stony Brook women split its weekend games, enjoying an outstanding 83-79 win at Bradley on Friday before succumbing to Iowa on Sunday. Brittany Snow had a fine weekend for the #Seawolves, scoring a career-high 30 points in the Bradley win and adding 15 at Iowa. She was the first #Seawolves women's hoops player in over six years to record a 30-point game. Just one game on the docket this week - a road match at Fairleigh Dickinson on Thursday. Cross Country strong at NCAA Regionals
In the NCAA Northeast Regional at Van Cortlandt Park, the #Seawolves runners had a strong showing as both the men and women had top 15 finishes. The top individual performer was America East champion Olivia Burne, who ran a season-best 6K time of 20:41.80, which netted her a 15th-place finish and All-Region honors. Volleyball finishes tied for second, heads to America East Championship
The #Seawolves are headed back to the America East Championship after qualifying for the tournament with a 9-5 record that was good enough for a three-way tie for second place. The team had lost at Hartford on Friday but rebounded with a win at Providence on Sunday, led by Taylor Gillie and Stephanie McFadden's strong performances. Stony Brook is two wins away from a tournament title and will begin its quest for the NCAA Tournament Friday against top seed New Hampshire.
