Stony Brook Athletics announces staff promotions

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Showing continued commitment to the investment in human resources within the department, Stony Brook Director of Athletics Jim Fiore has announced the promotions of three staff members - Thomas Chen, David VanDyke and Asha Michener - into leadership positions within the department.

"I am proud and excited to announce well-deserved promotions for three talented individuals who continue to make positive and significant impact within our athletic department," Fiore said. "Tom, Dave and Asha have excelled in their respective areas and have worked hard to help us achieve our mission and goals as a department. I am very much looking forward to their continued hard work and growth as leaders on my staff as Seawolves Athletics continues to develop, grow and achieve success."

Chen, who has served as the Director of Athletic Communications since September 2010, has been promoted to Assistant Director of Athletics for Communications. Chen oversees all aspects of communications and media relations that emanate from the athletics department and he serves as managing editor of athletics publications and, the official athletics website. He will also now oversee all of the department's digital and social media efforts and serve on the department's management team.

VanDyke, who has been the department's Director of Speed, Strength & Conditioning since August 2004, has been promoted to Assistant Director of Athletics for Speed, Strength & Conditioning. VanDyke has been an integral part of the department's success as he coordinates the mental and physical development of all of Stony Brook's student-athletes and works closely with the men's & women's basketball and women's soccer teams. He will continue to oversee the speed, strength & conditioning department, including the 8,000 square foot Dubin Family Athletic Performance Center, a state-of-the-art speed, strength & conditioning center that he helped design, lay out and equip.

Michener, who was named the Assistant Director of Athletic Communications in November 2010, has been elevated to the newly created position of Director of Digital Media. Michener is now the chief video producer and graphic design artist for the department and will coordinate all digital media projects, including production of all video projects, highlight packages, the end-of-year banquet video and other external videos, and designing collateral marketing, promotional and fundraising materials. He will also continue to serve as the media contact for the women's soccer, softball and swimming & diving teams.
