Bill Martinov Named Senior Associate Director of Athletics for External Services and Advancement

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Bill Martinov has been named Senior Associate Director of Athletics for External Services and Advancement at Stony Brook University, Director of Athletics Jim Fiore announced. Martinov arrives at Stony Brook after serving for the last four years as the Director of Athletics at Maritime College. Martinov will join the Stony Brook staff on June 20.

Martinov will serve as a member of the Stony Brook Athletics senior management team and will have direct oversight of department efforts involving fundraising, major gift development, annual giving, corporate sponsorships, marketing, promotions, and ticket operations. As the department's chief fundraising officer, Martinov will be charged with leading a capital fundraising campaign for athletics, securing major gifts and improving the annual giving campaign known as P.A.W.S. (Providing Athletes With Support).

"Bill brings a wide breadth and depth of experience as an athletic administrator that will prove instrumental in helping us to meet the aggressive revenue generating goals we have for our department. I am confident his leadership skills will prove invaluable to Stony Brook University and our athletic department as we embark on our capital campaign."

During his four years as Director of Athletics at Maritime College, Martinov provided leadership for a program that supported 23 varsity sports and more than 350 student-athletes. In his role as Director of Athletics, he implemented "Expectations for Championship Athletics," a new program philosophy which provided the foundation for organizational strategies, conduct code and departmental pride. In addition, Martinov oversaw the identification of a new brand/logo program, the creation of a Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, the negotiation of a departmental wide Nike shoe and apparel agreement, the installation of AstroPlay turf, field lights, bleachers with press box for the main field, new field scoreboard, a renovated baseball field, increased locker rooms, new coaches' offices and updated fitness facilities. Recently, Martinov and his staff were in the process of executing a new master plan for facilities, developed with the assistance from NACDA consultants, which calls for additional recreational and intramural facilities, additional meeting rooms, increased athletic training room space, and the installation of new turf and lights for additional fields of competition. Martinov has also served on the Skyline Conference Athletic Directors Executive Committee as well as committees involving membership, rules and regulations and the establishment of the new commissioner position.

Prior to his arrival at Maritime College, Martinov served for five years at St. John's University, specializing in athletics administration, strength and conditioning and alumni relations. His tenure included stints as associate director of alumni relations (2001-03), director of equipment operations/strength and conditioning (1999-01) and head strength and conditioning coach (1998-99).

As Associate Director of Alumni Relations, his responsibilities included staff management, budgeting, event planning and oversight of alumni activities in support of the University's School of Education and Varsity Club. Martinov also served as the recruitment chair for the inaugural/annual University Service Day community service project involving over 100 faculty, staff, students and alumni providing support to local charities and community service centers.

Martinov also worked for more than 11 seasons (1987-98) as strength and conditioning coach at the University of Notre Dame - the longest tenure of any strength and conditioning coach at the institution. The South Bend, Ind., native launched his successful career when he was named graduate assistant football coach at Austin Peay State University in 1986. Martinov was a member of the staff for both the Notre Dame 1988 National Championship football team and the St. John's University 2000 Big East Tournament Championship basketball team, a first for the Red Storm since 1986.

He has also shown a commitment to community service. As a co-founder of the Dream Course for Diabetes, Martinov worked with other South Bend natives and Notre Dame employees to develop a celebrity golf outing to benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation of Northern Indiana. He has also provided service to the Bread of Life Center in Brooklyn as well as supporting the Special Olympic regional competitions in both South Bend and Greencastle, Ind.

Martinov is a 1986 graduate of DePauw University where he earned his bachelor of arts in economics and lettered in football as a defensive back. He also holds a Master Degree of Science in Health and Physical Education from Austin Peay State University (1987) and a Master Degree of Science in Administration from the University of Notre Dame (1993). Martinov completed his Doctorate in Educational Administration from St. John's University (2003), in which he focused on the leadership behaviors of college football coaches. He also participated in the Center for Creative Leadership and while at St. John's, served as an adjunct professor for the freshmen studies program lecturing on leadership theory and athletics.
